Undergraduate SCAF Mini-Grant Opportunity

Student Community Action Fund Grants give students the opportunity to seek funding for brilliant service ideas that needs funding in order to get off the ground, or travel to civic engagement related conferences and events. Students who are ready to make a difference in their community and need resources to get started can apply for a Student Community Action Fund (SCAF) Grant through Michigan Campus Compact. SCAF Grant applications are also intended to introduce students to the world of grant writing. These funds are awarded on a reimbursement basis. Four types of funding are available:

Travel Grants
Up to $100 will be awarded to students to help subsidize educational expenses associated with attendance at community service-related workshops/conferences. These awards can be utilized to cover registration expenses, travel and expenses related to the following events: Student Community Action Network (SCAN) meetings, MCC Committee meetings, MCC Institute on Service-Learning, MCC Service Leadership Camp, Grand Valley State University Leadership Summit, Central Michigan University Issue Day, and the National Service Learning Conference. Alternative Breaks will not be funded. However, travel to other community service/civic engagement related events may be submitted for review.

Community Service Program Grants
Up to $200 per initiative will be awarded to assist with the implementation of student initiated community service or service-learning programs that support the missions of the recipient’s institution and MCC. 

Civic Dialogue Program Grants
Up to $200 per initiative will be awarded to fund the development and implementation of a dialogue or series of dialogues that will engage students in a discussion surrounding a public issue. (An ideal size for an introductory dialogue is 10-15 participants). These dialogues must support the missions of the recipient’s institution, and MCC.  

Civic Engagement Program Grants
Up to $200 per initiative will be awarded to fund the development and implementation of a civic engagement program, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, opening avenues for discussion, learning and cooperating through dialogue, and offering opportunities for people to become part of an interactive network of active and concerned citizens. Civic engagement programs can include but are not limited to voter registration/education, political advocacy, and community service/political collaboration. These programs must support the missions of the recipient’s institution and MCC.
