Brighter Futures Grants

In the 2008-2009 academic year, MCC offered seven competitive reimbursement grants of up to $6,000 each for MCC member faculty and/or staff to increase campus/community partnership efforts and to develop new or expand existing courses or service projects to address the needs of disadvantaged youth.

L&SBackground:
In 2006, Michigan Campus Compact (MCC), a coalition of Michigan college and university presidents dedicated to the promotion of civic education for college students through meaningful and purposeful connections with the community, applied for Learn and Serve funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service.  Learn and Serve supports and encourages service-learning throughout the United States, and enables over one million students to make meaningful contributions to their community while building their academic and civic skills. By engaging our nation’s young people in service-learning, Learn and Serve instills an ethic of lifelong community engagement.

MCC, with the help and support of statewide partners, proposes to facilitate the implementation of service and service-learning projects through the Investing in College Futures (ICF) grantprogram. ICF grants will benefit disadvantaged youth and positively reinforce the merits of higher education among current college students and disadvantaged youth. In addition, the programs will strengthen the ability of colleges and universities to institutionalize service and service-learning while engaging alumni, students, faculty, and staff in issues concerning disadvantaged youth. ICF will involve more than 3,800 participants in three years, including college and university alumni from the Baby Boom generation, and launch more than 126 service and/or service-learning projects.
