Special Guest
Dr. Char Gray will be joining us at this year's Institute. Dr. Gray is the executive director for Pennsylvania Campus Compact where her role is to provide support, training, and resources to 63 member institutions as students and faculty identify ways to partner with their communities to enhance the quality of life. Dr. Gray will be attending the Institute to speak with faculty about service-learning collaborations including regional, interdisciplinary and cross-discipline.

Welcome Reception
A general welcome reception will be held Monday, February 8 at the Grand Traverse Resort from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Enjoy refreshments and network with colleagues before the opening of the conference on Tuesday morning. This reception is free of charge and hosted by Michigan Campus Compact and Michigan Community Service Commission.

Driving/Parking

Grand Traverse Resort is situated in the northwest corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula along the shores of Lake Michigan's East Grand Traverse Bay. Just six miles northeast of Traverse City, Michigan, it is a ten-minute drive from Traverse City's Cherry Capital Airport (TVC). The Resort offers Airport Shuttle service to and from Cherry Capital Airport for guests who choose to fly-in.

Keynote Speakers

Sam Singh
Sam Singh is a senior policy consultant with the research and evaluation firm, Public Policy Associates.  Sam’s consulting work focuses on strategic planning, nonprofit management and economic development. Previously, Sam served ten years as the President and CEO of the Michigan Nonprofit Association, an 1100 member-based association that was actively involved in public policy, capacity building and leadership development for the nonprofit sector.  He has also held professional positions with the Volunteer Centers of Michigan and the Points of Light Foundation.

Sam Singh has been actively involved in politics in the city of East Lansing, Michigan; serving one term as mayor and three terms on the City Council. Sam also has extensive community experience having served on over twenty nonprofit boards throughout his career. He has served on the boards of such organizations as the National Council of Nonprofit Associations, Capital Region Community Foundation, Points of Light Foundation, Capital Area Transportation Authority and Michigan Association of United Ways.  Sam recently completed a self-funded sabbatical that had him travel to all seven continents and forty-six countries over a seventeen month period. 

Molly McCloskey
Molly McCloskey serves as a Managing Director, Whole Child Programs at ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), directing multiple components of the ASCD Whole Child Initiative, a multiyear, cross-organizational program, including member and non-member outreach and engagement, ASCD’S Healthy School Communities Program, and development of capacity-building resources and services. Molly serves on numerous ASCD internal teams and volunteers for the Prince George’s County Public Schools Comer Steering Committee. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology
from the Catholic University of America and a master’s of education degree in school counseling from the University of Maryland.

Since joining ASCD, McCloskey has presented across the United States, Canada and Germany and has written and been interviewed about school reform, whole child education and First Amendment issues in the Miami Herald, USA Today, Edutopia and the Chicago Tribune.  She co-authored the ASCD Infobrief on The Whole Child: A Framework for Education in the 21st Century in February 2005 and the Fall 2007 update of that issue. Molly will be discussing service-learning in the K-12 setting.

Peter Reui
Peter Ruei is an undergraduate student at Western Michigan University majoring in Aviation Science with a minor in Business Administration. Formally a Sudanese refugee, Peter came to the United States in 2000. He is a recipient of the John Seita Scholarship at WMU and will speak along with Dr. John Seita on the program, as well as address access to higher education for young people in
the foster care system.
