Listening Tour - 2007

listening tour logo.The 2007 Michigan Campus Compact Listening Tour will serve to inspire campuses involved with the movement for civic learning within higher education, provide feedback and direction for Michigan Campus Compact, and allow for creative thought and leadership to emerge within the movement.

The primary element of the Listening Tour was a visit to each campus by MCC staff. Visits took place September-December 2007; the contents and timing of each visit were determined in consultation with our primary contact on the campus.

We hope to see many of you at The Institute: Service-Learning and Civic Engagement at Central Michigan University this week. Just a friendly reminder that for those of you who would like to see the overview of results from the Michigan Campus Compact Listening Tour, Amy Smitter will be presenting them in the first workshop session/faculty meeting on Thursday, from 10:30 am - 11:45 am in auditorium at the University Center at Central Michigan University.

If you cannot catch up and want to be part of this clarifying work, we are scheduling two conference calls for later this month.

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 ay 1:00 p.m. EST
Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. EST

The calls will overview what was learned, next steps and seek your input on issues related to our common agenda for engaged learning.

If you would like to participate in one of the calls, please e-mail Shelley Long at slong@micampuscompact.org by Friday, February 22, 2008.. Please let us know which call you would like to participate on. We will email call-in information following your request.

Member Campus Visits

Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) staff like to get out and visit with our members. This is a great way to gain an understanding of each campus' unique perspective on community service, service-learning, and civic engagement. Campus visits can be an important way for MCC staff to understand each affiliate campus and its approach and aspirations regarding civic engagement.

These member site visits offer the MCC staff an opportunity to:

  • learn about your campus and the variety of ways in which it fosters community partnerships and civic engagement;
  • listen to representatives from your campus as they describe the strengths and challenges of implementing community/civic engagement initiatives at your campus;
  • explain the history, purpose and potential of Michigan Campus Compact and the national organization to various campus representatives engaged in community service, service-learning, outreach, and other community/civic engagement activities; and,
  • describe current and upcoming programs and opportunities, and ways in which representatives from you campus can take advantage of your institution's affiliation with Michigan Campus Compact.

The format of these vists is flexible. MCC staff is prepared to present information about MCC to individuals, small or large groups, and there should also be time for an interactive discussion with key individuals. Regardless of the format, MCC staff would like to have an opportunity to meet with a variety of representatives, including students, academic and student affairs staff, faculty, upper level administrators, any person offering leadership to co-curricular, service-learning and civic engagement activities and any relevant community partners. Campus visits usually last between 2.5 hours and a full day, depending on the number and type (large group or small group) of meetings planned.

Executive Director Amy Smitter and the rest of the staff will visit where needed, and be available for on-site technical assistance, as always. To arrange a campus visit please contact Amy Smitter directly at smitter@micampuscompact.org.

Thanks for your assistance in helping to make our time with you as productive as possible.
