1. MCC offers travel and program grants for student-initiated community service projects. This fund is designed to create additional opportunities for students to design and fund their own community service opportunities and encourage educational opportunities through attendance at statewide and national training events. 2. The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration, organized by Michigan Campus Compact, honors and recognizes exemplary collaborations, undertaken by a college or university in partnership with a community group, which address critical areas of public need. The award recipients receive $10,000 in support of their program to be divided between their community partner and the campus. 3. MCC offers grants of up to $1,000 for new programs facilitated by students to help disadvantaged youth while assisting in college retention and persistance to graduation. 4. Applications being accepted for project Ignition - APRIL 15, 2007 - Project Ignition is a partnership between NYLC and State Farm to promote teen driver safety. The winner of Project Ignition receives a $10,000 grant from State Farm, 25 applicants receive a $2,000 grant and the top 10 receive a $5,000 travel stipend to the National Service-Learning Conference to see who will win the Best of the Best. 1. Promoting Civic Engagement in Healthcare Management Education: Concepts & Cases has just been published by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/2002fellows-hewitt.html
2. The Corporation for National and Community Service has recently released "Volunteer Growth in America: A Review of Trends Since 1974." According to the report, volunteering is at a 30-year high. The report provides a breakdown by age group and gives detailed information on the volunteerism trends of teenagers, "Baby Boomers," and Older Adults. 3. The final report for NYLC's "National Survey on Service-Learning and Transitioning to Adulthood" is now available for download. 4. Recent discussions about the inclusion of the community engagement agenda as part of the National Protocols for Higher Education Approval Processes and calls for Third Stream funding have highlighted the need for some measures of university-community engagement. 5. The 2005 Conference on Research Universities and Civic Engagement was co-convened by Campus Compact and the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University. A report from the conference has just been published, entitled "Report on New Times Demand New Scholarship: Research Universities and Civic Engagement: A Leadership Agenda." The report includes a rationale for engaged scholarship as well as recommendations for what research universities can do to advance civic engagement at their institutions and across higher education. 6. Canada25 (www.canada25.com) has launched its fourth national policy report, "Canadians & the Common Good: Building a Civic Nation Through Civic Engagement." The report affirms the value of civic engagement -- defined as the process of interacting more often and more meaningfully with others in respect of civic issues -- as the most promising means to build a shared civic identity and, by extension, a stronger country.

3. The New England Resource Center for Higher Education is now accepting nominations for the 2007 Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement, which recognizes a faculty member who connects his or her teaching, research, and service to community engagement. Unlike traditional service-learning awards that focus on the link between teaching and service, the Lynton Award emphasizes applied scholarly activity more broadly. The scholarship of engagement (also known as faculty professional service, outreach scholarship, public scholarship, scholarship for the common good, and community-based scholarship) represents an integrated view of scholarly activity in which teaching, research, and service overlap and are mutually reinforcing, is characterized by scholarly work tied to a faculty member's expertise, is of benefit to the external community, is visible and shared, and reflects the mission of the institution. http://www.nerche.org/Lynton_Award/call07/call07.html.
