March 2008

In higher education, spring is a time to feel proud of all we have accomplished in the academic year. For those of us that have not only taught, but deepened learning through service, we have good reason to be proud. We know that we have created learning that will last, and have opened the eyes of our students to a world that they can improve and change.

This spring we will once again honor the college students that have made a difference in their communities at the Outstanding Student Service Awards. This annual award ceremony will be held on April 5, 2008 at 11:00 am at the Lansing Holiday Inn South. Over 150 students will be honored from 20 member institutions. We hope you will plan to come and celebrate the success of these students and our collective work in educating them.

In addition, we all know outstanding faculty that should be honored for exemplary leadership in advancing the civic learning of students, including public scholarship, building campus commitment to service-learning and civic engagement, and fostering reciprocal community partnerships. Nominating them for the Thomas Ehrlich award from Campus Compact is one way to honor them. The award is named for Thomas Ehrlich, former chair of the Campus Compact board of directors and president emeritus of Indiana University. One award of $2,000 will be granted to a faculty member from a Campus Compact member institution. Ten finalists will also be selected and recognized. Application deadline is March 21 and you can get more information at: http://www.compact.org/awards. Happy Spring!
