Q. What is SCAN?
A. SCAN is a network of college students active in service on their campuses across Michigan . SCAN serves as the student voice of Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) and that voice impacts decisions made at state and local levels affecting civic engagement.
Q. What kinds of students are involved with SCAN?
A. Students who are active leaders on their campuses and communities. They coordinate campus service activities (like Alternative Spring Breaks), are active in student government, are advocates for social change, and more. SCAN representatives are excited to learn about the bigger picture of civic engagement and are able to bring this information back to their own campus.
Q. What is on the SCAN Listserv?
A. SCAN's listserv is packed with valuable information for students. There are job and internship listings, conference announcements, calls for presenters, volunteer opportunities, MCC and SCAN updates, SCAN meeting information, an opportunity to advertise events on your campus, and a chance to pose questions to the whole SCAN network.
Q. When are SCAN meetings and what goes on?
A. SCAN meetings are held one Saturday a month from 10:30am-3:00pm at the MCC Offices in Lansing. Speakers give presentations and we discuss issues of service, politics and civic engagement. SCAN members will be planning the student Day at the State Capitol, creating public issue statements and networking with their peers on other campuses.
Q. Can I attend just one workshop?
A. MCC coordinates SCAN trainings as opportunities for all students to learn how to connect their campus to community. Anyone can attend a SCAN meeting, especially if the topic is of particular interest to the student. The full potential of the group of SCAN members and guests is utilized when everyone attends all of the SCAN meetings. If something keeps you from a workshop, meeting notes are available through MCC.
Q. Why should I be a part of SCAN?
A. Through SCAN you can network with students, faculty and staff on other campuses that provide a variety of resources. SCAN allows you to have a voice in shaping significant higher education decisions and gives you the opportunity to discuss important issues with people who care!
