Outstanding Student Service Awards 2005-2006
The Michigan Campus Compact Outstanding Student Service Awards was presented on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. Descriptions of each award type can be found at www.micampuscompact.org/studentawards.asp.
Outstanding Community Impact
Central Michigan University ~ John Johnstin (Graduate)
John is working toward a Masters degree in Professional Counseling and has worked with Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates (SAPA) for 5 years addressing issues of stalking, sexual assault, relationship violence and harassment. He works to see that survivors are given a voice and receive the trust and support they deserve. He feels that three components in a community must happen to make change: thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Steven Thompson, Sexual Aggression Services Coordinator at CMU says that John possesses the ability to listen, to be of strong character, to have high integrity, and a strong desire to help people and communicates professionally to be a strong advocate. John has also been involved in many Alternative Breaks including working with Habitat for Humanity in Romania. This upcoming summer he will be volunteering in Poland doing historical preservation at the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Central Michigan University ~ Lauren Stachura
Lauren is a senior at CMU with a major in Family Studies. She has been involved with Alternative Breaks at CMU throughout her college career and serves as the Orientation and Training Leader for trip site leaders. Lauren is passionate about her local involvement in the PEAK Program (Partner Empowering All Youth). She began in the middle school developing after school program, specifically “Helping Hands” – where youth participate in community volunteerism. Ryan Fewins, Assistant Director of the Student Life Center at SVSU says of Lauren: “She takes the empathy and understanding of community issues from the classroom and applies it to every day with her leaders that she is charged with. Her commitment to social justice and active citizenship has become a calling, a priority in making life decisions."
Davenport University ~ Sandra Stuckhardt
Sandra is a junior at Davenport majoring in Paralegal Studies. Sandra is a strong supporter of neighborhood associations and is active in the South West Area Neighbors Neighborhood Association in Grand Rapids. She has designed a Community Builders Conference now in it’s 4 th year. It is designed to give residents tools to positively impact the quality of life including law enforcement, court systems, housing, zoning, and community development. The training includes letter writing to the City Council, media literacy, gardening, and interpersonal communication. She is working to address “white flight” and the disparity between the “haves” and the “have nots” - with deteriorating neighborhoods, job loss, poor education and less opportunity to move out of poverty. Lori Stanton, Community Organizer for the South West Area Neighbors says of Sandra: “She is able to make a significant impact in her community service because she has an innate understanding of systems theory and how to affect change.”
Jackson Community College ~ Tamara Myers
Tamara is a junior at Jackson Community College majoring in Nursing. Tamara used her nursing leadership project to improve the lives of young women in Jackson County through her Dream*Believe*Achieve Program. It involves helping young women realize that they are capable of big things and be prepared for obstacles and hardships. It involved 750 youth talking about issues of healthy lifestyle, overcoming poverty, unplanned pregnancy, and envisioning the future. Colleen Chadderton, Professor of Nursing at JCC says that she’s never seen any student go above and beyond like Tamara. She single-handedly achieved her dream by submitting grants, fundraising, and collaborating with the local community to help young girls make good choices. Attendees said “They didn’t know anyone else felt like they did” and “She makes me know that I can be somebody to”.
Kalamazoo College ~ Lisa Dallacqua & Ted Hufstader
Lisa and Ted are seniors at Kalamazoo College. Lisa and Ted have co-coordinated the AMIGOS after-school program in a local high school. They are a true partnership in leadership. AMIGOS involves Kalamazoo students and bilingual high school students who meet weekly for homework help and fun activities. The President of Kalamazoo College, Dr. Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran says that "Lisa and Ted have integrated their experiences with bilingual students with their study of immigrant populations and minority issues and have developed an intense knowledge of the depth and complexity of social and international community issues. Other students, especially first years have found Ted and Lisa to be very influential and accordingly have become more involved in community service and service-learning programs. Ted and Lisa’s service and accomplishments result from their sincere and genuine affection for the Kalamazoo community and to people everywhere; their success stems from hard work as well as their commitment to social justice and the dignity of all people. Their extraordinary friendship – the exceptional collaboration and equal partnership between these two remarkable people – is something we all take pride in and celebrate."
Wayne State University ~ Mandeep Kaur Shergill
Mandeep is a senior at Wayne State University in the Doctor of Pharamacy Program. She is passionate about deaf patients receiving the same quality of care as their hearing counterparts. She organized a 4-month long medical sign language class open to all students and faculty twice a week lecturing on deaf culture and effective communication. Dr. David Pitts, Associate Professor of Pharmacology worked with Mandeep to create a Student Cultural Competency Committee to address the issue of cultural competency in health care. Mandeep is the President of the Academy of Student Pharmacists which holds more than 5 health fairs in Detroit and a weekly clinic for resident of Highland Park, providing medication counseling, health screenings and more.
