OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY IMPACT

Albion College ~ Joe Brown
Albion College Student Joe BrownJoe Brown is currently a senior at Albion College, seeking a degree in political science and a concentration of pre-law and public policy.  During his four years at Albion, his involvements include Best Buddies, Big Brothers Big Sisters, student mentoring at Albion’s Marshall Elementary School, serving as an International Fraternity Council (IFC) chair member and coaching Albion High School JV football.  He is currently mentoring at Star Commonwealth’s home for neglected boys and girls in Albion, the recipient of Joe’s donation.  As a coach at Albion High School, he was able to set up a program for tutoring Albion College athletes and be a positive role model for students.  This fall he will intern with a Congressman in Washington, D.C., with plans to attend law school the following fall and pursue his dream to become a United States Navy Jag Corp lawyer.  While he is unsure what the future holds, his dedication and passion for neglected and abused youth will be a major determination of his life career.

Central Michigan University ~ Pamela Barclay (Graduate Student)
Central Michigan University student Pam BarclayPam Barclay’s commitment to service through civic engagement can be seen through her expansive volunteer involvement throughout her career at Central Michigan University.  She has devoted countless hours to causes and projects, and continues to be engaged in her home community in addition to her deep commitment to service on CMU’s campus.  The recipient of Pam’s donation is the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, an organization with which she has been involved for more than a decade.  Pam will finish a Master of Science in Administration degree in May 2007 and is eager to continue her commitment to service as she begins her professional career.

Jackson Community College ~ Megan Keersmaekers
Megan Keersmaekers is currently working on completing her prerequisites for the Bachelor of Science Nursing program at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, and will return to Jackson Community College next semester.  In 2002, she received her associate degree in marketing from Baker College.  Recently, Megan was elected to the Board of Directors at the Jackson Friendly Home, the recipient of her donation, based on her efforts during their annual fundraising dinner.  Her volunteer activities include the Harriet A. Myer and Professional Women events, two Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Marathons raising more than $1,700 each year, the Asthma Walk at the Detroit Zoo, a two-week church missionary trip to Honduras and traveled to China for three weeks as a People to People Student Ambassador in high school.  Her volunteer efforts are encouraged by her parents Jim and Kate Keersmaekers and her sister Brie.

Kettering University ~ Matt Schwartz
Kettering University student Matt SchwartsMatt Schwarts is currently a senior at Kettering University in Flint, MI seeking a degree in mechanical engineering. He is a member of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) at Kettering, and was one of the project leaders for the Climbing Through Flint project where EWB members designed and built climbing structures for all 20 Flint public elementary schools in July 2006.  Currently, Matt is the project manager for the first international project where EWB members are developing a method to supply clean, safe water to a community in Mexico.  Matt has selected Engineers Without Borders to receive his donation.

Northern Michigan University ~ Shawn Brown
Shawn Brown, a senior honors and athletic training student at Northern Michigan University, is originally from Traverse City and currently lives with her husband in Marquette.  Her volunteer experiences include numerous opportunities through the local pre-med club and Marquette General Hospital (including sitting for at-risk patients, ER cleaning, surgical ward volunteer, etc.) and being the Assistant Coordinator for the NMU Volunteer Center, which links volunteer opportunities in the community to students on campus.  In addition to her local volunteering, Shawn is very active in international volunteerism, having completed three missions to Kenya, East Timor and Peru, and founding the International Volunteering Student Organization at her university.  Shawn will graduate in May and plans on attending medical school at Michigan State University.  Shawn has selected Village Volunteers to receive her donation.

University of Michigan-Flint ~ Keith Richard Fluegge
Keith Fluegge is a senior at the University of Michigan-Flint, graduating in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts and Psychology, minor in health education and emphasis in psycho-neuroimmunology.  His service experiences include educating Flint area residents on healthy eating and food choices through the Greater Flint Health Coalition, founding Americans for Informed Democracy at UM-Flint and hosting a summit on Future of Muslim/Western World Relations, participating in the American Heart Association (AMA) Heart Walk and organizing AMA’s Nickelodeon “Worldwide Day of Play” throughout mid-Michigan. 

MICHIGAN HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Ferris State University ~ Erica Rogerson
Ferris State University student Erica RogersonErica Rogerson of Walled Lake is currently a junior at Ferris State University, majoring in Resort Management with minors in Club Management and Special Events and Meeting Planning.  When not in class, Erica spends her time volunteering and participating in community organizations.  She is the president of Ferris STARS for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan, president of Professional Convention Management Association and a member of Club Managers Association of America, Eta Sigma Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa and Hospitality Gala Special Services Manager.  Erica’s dedication to Make-A-Wish Foundation led her to found the Ferris State University Chapter - Ferris Stars.  The biggest project Ferris Stars managed was a fishing tournament, “Catch-A-Fish, Grant-A-Wish,” which showcased Big Rapids brand new Riverwalk while benefiting Make-A-Wish.

Kalamazoo College ~ Holly Anderson
Kalamazoo College student Holly AndersonHolly Anderson was born in Princeton, New Jersey, but she has spent most of her life in West Michigan where her family resides.  A graduate of Grand Haven High School and currently a sophomore at Kalamazoo College, she is majoring in Human Development Social Relations and earning a concentration in women’s studies.  Holly’s first class at the college was a service-learning course introducing a Farms to Cafeteria project.  She is currently the student leader for Farms2K, an organization that developed out of this simple class research project.  Farms2K is connecting research by students, faculty and staff with community organizations to promote the local food movement within Kalamazoo’s college cafeteria.  This fall Holly is looking forward to studying abroad in Aberdeen, Scotland.  She hopes to learn more of Scotland’s expanding Farms to Cafeteria programs and share it with her Kalamazoo community upon her return.

Schoolcraft College ~ Jaime Finfrock
Schoolcraft College student Jamie FinfrockJaime Finfrock of Belleville is an Accounting major currently attending Schoolcraft College part-time and plans to transfer to Walsh College in the fall of 2007 to complete the 150-hour requirement to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).  Jaime is currently working full-time for Robinson, Pietras, Kalisky & Co., P.C. in Farmington Hills as a bookkeeper and spends her weekends volunteering her time to prepare tax returns and supervise tax assistance sites for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at Schoolcraft College and for the Accounting Aid Society in Detroit, which both provide tax assistance to low-income families.  Jaime introduced the Accounting Aid Society to VITA which helped enhance the campus-based efforts to address a community need of tax assistance, and she has plans to extend this program to other local community colleges and universities.
