OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY IMPACT

Central Michigan University ~ Christina Wickham
Christina Wickham is an undergraduate student in the Secondary Education program at Central Michigan University.  She is majoring in history and social studies and would like to teach in a disadvantaged district.  Since transferring from Kirtland Community College in the fall of 2006, Christina has been employed by the Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching (FaCIT) as CMU’s service learning resource coordinator.  Her position involves working with faculty, students, campus and community organizers and public school educators to build partnerships that support service-learning.  Christina has helped organize workshops, created content and resources for the university’s service-learning Web site, produced a service-learning DVD, and co-authored a service-learning handbook for student teachers and P-12 faculty.

Eastern Michigan University ~Jessica Klein (Graduate Student)
Central Michigan University student Pam BarclayJessica Klein is a first year graduate student studying criminology at Eastern Michigan University.  Through her work at the Women’s Resource Center on campus and her fellowship through Young People For (YP4), she implemented the “1 in 3” campaign at EMU to raise awareness of the prevalence of sexual violence in today’s society.  The campaign focused on the international statistic that one in three women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime.  She dedicated her time to facilitating interactive training sessions to discuss the myths and truths of sexual violence.  Some of the discussions and workshops included The Role Men Play, In the News, Keeping Your Kids Safe, and Uncovering the Myths, Discovering the Truth.  She hopes to take the “1 in 3” campaign to a national level, bringing awareness to college campuses all over the country.  Jessica also dedicates her time as Student Program Coordinator of the Women’s Center through events and programs such as The Vagina Monologues, Take Back the Night, Cell Phone Drive and the Clothesline Project.

Eastern Michigan University ~ Robin Miller
Robin Miller is a third-year student at Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Public Administration with minors in Art History and Conservation and Resource Use.  In addition to pursuing a certificate in nonprofit management with the American Humanics program, Robin is active in several organizations on campus including Circle K International, Relay for Life, GREEN (Gathering Resources to Educate about our Environment and Nature), Alternative Breaks, and the University Judicial Board.  She volunteers during the summer at the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden in Grand Rapids as a Play and Activity Leader and last summer served as an intern at the Discovery Creek Children’s Museum in Washington, D.C.  In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends at local coffee shops, resurrecting the art of letter writing, visiting museums, and reading the Harry Potter series.

Ferris State University ~ Nichole Wheelock
Kettering University student Matt SchwartsNichole Wheelock is currently a senior at Ferris State University pursuing a degree in Social Work.  During her four years at Ferris, she has been very service-oriented, working very closely with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, W.I.S.E. (a local women’s shelter) and the United Way.  Among a variety of other activities and leadership positions at Ferris, she is the President of Ferris Idols, a group that works with BBBS and puts on monthly events for the children and families of the program, and has granted three wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Nichole was the co-chair for the United Way Student Campaign this year and has been the student coordinator for both Take Back and the Vagina Monologues - both of which work to raise awareness about violence against women, specifically domestic abuse and sexual assault.  After graduation in May, she has been accepted into the AmeriCorps NCCC program and is set for the Fall 2008 team out of Denver, CO.  After this service opportunity, she will go on to pursue her Master’s of Social Work and continue on her mission to serve others.

Michigan State University ~ Monica Mukerjee
Monica Mukerjee will graduate from Michigan State University in 2008 in International
Relations and Psychology.  Selected as a Truman Scholar for her commitment to public service, Monica has volunteered as a sexual assault and crisis counselor, medical advocate, and director of children’s theatre workshops.  She has participated in Alternative Spring Break trips in Staten Island, NY and Jamaica, and led her own trip to Adjuntas Puerto Rico in 2007.  Through S.C.O.U.T. B.A.N.A.N.A. (Serving Citizens of Uganda Today Because Africa Needs a New Ambulance), an organization dedicated to increasing healthcare in Africa, Monica has started one of the first undergraduate journals dedicated to international development.  Her undergraduate research focuses on the gendered impact war and sexual violence during violent conflict.  Upon graduation, Monica will be interning in Washington, D.C. at an organization that addresses genocide and human rights issues, and in the fall, she will attend Oxford University to pursue refugee studies to improve lives within conflict zones.

University of Michigan ~ James Logan
James Logan is a senior at the University of Michigan, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Afro-American and African Studies.  During his collegiate career, he played
varsity football for the 2004 and 2005 seasons.  James was also heavily involved in many student organizations, chairing four organizations his senior year.  He has been dedicated to Intellectual Minds Making a Difference (IMMAD), an ACT preparatory organization that also mentors students in and around the Detroit area, since its inception in 2002.  He also works as an
Academic Success Partner for the Leaders and Best program and is a Student Ambassador for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.  In May 2008, he will travel to South Africa for a study abroad program at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.  Upon graduation he will attend graduate school for education.  He has a goal to receive his Ph.D. in the education field to continue serving the youth and his community through the medium of education.

MICHIGAN HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Alma College ~ Drew Emge
Ferris State University student Erica RogersonDrew Emge, a Bay City native and junior at Alma College who is majoring in Global Health Care and Policy, is a volunteer at the Masonic Pathways Senior Living Center, Resident Assistant, Alpha Phi Omega’s Omicron Tau Chapter (the National Service Fraternity) president, and co-founder of the United Health Professions of Alma College.  Drew also is a student member of the Eugene Kenaga International DDT Conference that was held at Alma College in mid-March, which brought
together academics and health professionals from around the world to address the controversies surrounding past and present DDT manufacturing and use in the Alma community and malaria zones across Africa.  Such experiences are the foundation of his commitment to a career addressing the global impact of health disparities, which include the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the spread of malaria, in the developing world.  Furthermore, Model United Nations and HIV/AIDS advocacy work in South Africa and Tanzania have given him a profound appreciation for the devastating impact of such diseases.  He hopes to work as a health officer for the World Health Organization on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care in sub-Saharan Africa.

Ferris State University ~ Robert Rankey II
Kalamazoo College student Holly AndersonRobert Rankey II of Bay City is a junior at Ferris State University where he is pursuing a Bachelors of Business Administration.  Following his time at Ferris, he intends to enter a joint-degree program in Law and Masters of Business Administration.  Robbie currently serves as Student Government Vice President and has planned a number of events on his campus, including a ‘9/11: We Have Not Forgotten’ Candlelight Memorial to remember the tragedies our nation faces, and a ‘Coming Together for the Holidays’ campus food drive that raised nearly 3,000 pounds of food for his campus community.  He also has founded two organizations, Bulldogs for Life and Young Americans for Freedom at Ferris State University.  Robbie would like to thank his parents, Bob and Mary Ann, his sister Kellie, and his girlfriend Kasey for their loving support and encouragement of his
endeavors.

University of Michigan ~ Andrea Bachman
Schoolcraft College student Jamie FinfrockAndrea Bachman of Saline is studying in the Residential College at the University of Michigan, with a Social Science concentration on Youth Empowerment Studies.  Aside from her classes, she works as an Academic Success Partner, or mentor, to eight freshmen and sophomore students through the POSSE Leaders and Best program housed in the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), and works with other undergraduates, faculty and administrators to implement an after school math program, the Youth People’s Project (www.typp.org) in Southeastern Michigan schools and community centers.  She also volunteers with the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) as a creative writing co-facilitator for a poetry workshop at a nearby women’s prison.  Additionally, Andrea participates in a Christian book-study with other “twenty-something’s,” and is collaborating with a small team at her church to talk about the framing and implementation of the congregation’s core values.
