Outstanding Student Service Awards 2008-2009

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY IMPACT

Candace Marcotte – University of Michigan – Dearborn
Candace Marcotte will graduate from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in May of 2009
with a Bachelor of Arts and Elementary Education Certifi cate. She has been an active volunteer
since joining the Girl Scouts in fi rst grade. Her passion for service has taken her to North
Carolina to work with the National Relief Network and the Upper Peninsula to care for children
with disabilities. Candace remains active in the community by volunteering and coordinating
volunteers for Beyond Basics, a literacy enrichment program for the Detroit Public School system.
She has organized book drives for the organization and has collected more than 400 books
for students. She also coordinated a volunteer program at Vista Maria, a welfare agency for
girls. Being a future educator, Candace hopes to inspire the youth to become more active in
community service. Candace has selected the Bay Cliff Health Camp to receive her donation.

Phillip McDonald – Wayne State University
Philip McDonald is pursuing a major in Biological Sciences Honors with a co-major in
University Honors and a minor in Spanish. Phillip earned a seat in MedStart, the eight year
BS/MD program at Wayne State University and will graduate from the School of Medicine
in 2013. He had the opportunity to study Spanish abroad at the Universidad Veracruzana
in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. He performed research in the biological sciences as well as
the social sciences and presented his work with the organization he assisted in establishing,
the WSU Gender & Sexuality Resource Community (GSRC), at Wayne State’s 5th Annual
Undergraduate Research Conference. He also volunteers with Hospice of Michigan as a
companion for the terminally ill. Phillip is the only child of Brian and Janice McDonald and was
a 2005 National Merit Finalist. Phillip has selected the WSU Gender & Sexuality Resource
Community (GSRC) to receive his donation.

Angela Seeley—Saginaw Valley State University
Angela Seeley is a second year graduate Student at Saginaw Valley State University, and will
graduate in May with a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. Angela is active in several
organizations on campus including the Alternative Spring Break program, Alpha Phi Omega
Big Brothers Big Sisters, Campus Ambassador and is currently serving as the Student Association
President. She also volunteers for various organizations and philanthropies during the year
including Relay for Life, Battle of the Valleys, Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity, to
name a few. She served as a Co-Chair of last year’s Relay for Life, which raised more than
$42,000 for cancer research through the American Cancer Society. Angela has selected the
SVSU Student Association - Battle of the Valley to benefi t the Boys and Girls Club to receive
her donation.

Allison Sheppard – Eastern Michigan University
Allison Sheppard is a senior at Eastern Michigan University majoring in communication. Over
the past three years at EMU, Allison has put her studies into practice with co-curricular activities.
She is currently the student program coordinator for the Eastern Votes Coalition, a Resident
Advisor to 56 freshmen, and the Vice President of Service for the National Residence Hall
Honorary, Women’s Center volunteer, and an active member of Delta Zeta Sorority. Allison fi nds
the most joy in her work with the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion where she’s
volunteered as a Camp Counselor, Ambassador, Intern and Programmer, working with Metro-
Detroit middle/high school students for the past 8 years. MRDI works to educate and empower
youth to be the change in their communities. Allison has selected Michigan Roundtable for
Diversity and Inclusion to receive her donation.

Colleen Gitter – Michigan State University
Colleen Gitter is a senior at Michigan State University, studying Elementary Education. Colleen
has been involved in many campus organizations both within and outside of the College of
Education. She has held leadership positions in Kappa Delta Pi, the education honor society
and helped renovate Lansing schools with Student Michigan Education Association. Outside of
the College of Education, Colleen has is involved with Hall Government and Into the Streets.
Colleen’s biggest passion at Michigan State has been volunteering with and organizing the
Alternative Spring Break Program. She also volunteers weekly at Lyons Elementary School and
the Volunteers of America Soup Kitchen. Colleen’s future goals are to join the Peace Corps and
teach internationally. In her free time, she loves to run, read, travel and relax with friends.
Colleen has selected Michigan State University’s Alternative Spring Break program to receive
her donation.

Trista S. Buzzo – Northern Michigan University
Trista Buzzo is a seven-year student at Northern Michigan University, majoring in Early
Childhood Development and Nursing with a minor in Health and Nutrition. She was the social
chair for the Student Nurses Association in which they developed a benefi t for Big Brothers Big
Sisters and did a variety of community service projects such as Make a Difference Day and can
drives for the local women’s shelter. During the summer of 2008, Trista traveled to Honduras
and to work with a hospital project through a study aboard program, promoting the hospital
project to the community, and assisted in a diabetes inquiry project. Trista along with several
others have been working to develop a non-profi t organization for the Honduran Hospital
Project. With the support of her family and friends, Trista is happy to be able to help others and
plans to continue to do so even after completion of college. Trista has selected Honduras Class
NE/HL 386 to receive her donation.

MICHIGAN HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Kevin Everhart - Alma College
Kevin Everhart will graduate from Alma College in the spring of 2010. He is majoring
in Business Administration with a minor in Environmental Science. Kevin has been
the Alma College Class of 2010 President for the past three years. He is currently
the Student Congress Treasurer, and has been elected as Student Congress President
for the 2009-2010 school year. Kevin has been a Resident Assistant for the past
two years, and will be an Assistant Hall Director next year. He currently serves on
six committees on the Alma College campus. In addition, Kevin has been on seven
mission trips across the United States. He graduated from Alma College in 2006 and
is the son of Don and Viki Everhart.

Claire Gould - Ferris State University
Claire Gould is a student at Ferris State University. She is pursuing a dual major in
Biology and Medical Technology. Claire is the Vice President of Student Government
and currently running for President. She is also the President of National Residence
Hall Honorary, a member of Association of Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Diverse
Sexuality and Gender Alliance and a Resident Advisor in Cramer Hall. She also
coordinated ‘The BIG Event’, a day where students go out into the community and
say “thank you” to the residents by performing little odd and chores. The event had
more than 700 student volunteers going out to more than 70 houses in the Big Rapids
Community. When not working, she enjoys shopping, the movies, and spending
time with those she loves. Claire would like to thank her brother Daniel, her boyfriend
Alex, and her mom, Dina, and dad, Dan, for their vast amount of encouragement and
support.
