Venture Grant Cycle 35 Grantees

Kirtland Community College “Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S.”
Kirtland Community College Cosmetology students will provide services to the clients of Riverhouse Shelter. This is our local domestic violence shelter. These clients have been the victims of domestic violence and have fled their homes to protect the safety of themselves and their children. Kirtland students will perform much needed hair, nail, and skin care to these clients and nurturing environment.

Olivet College “Bridging service learning and community service at Olivet College”
In support of it's vision, Education for Social and Individual Responsibility, Olivet College would like to create a Volunteer Center. The Volunteer Center would act as a resource for service learning, community service, and civic engagement for students, faculty, and staff. Its installation would bring together all college service related activities, will aid in volunteer recruitment, increase service learning opportunities, and enhance Service Day participation among the campus and community.  

Saginaw Valley State University “Write it, Draw it, Do it”
Workshop in February 2008 to develop writing skills and artistic creativity. The project will culminate with the completion of two 15 by 5 foot computer generated murals designed by the program participants, which will be displayed in both the high school and the university, along with a booklet that contains the students' artwork and creative writing/poetry. This workshop will address the issues of retention of underrepresented high school students in higher education, and will give university students who are future teachers and university faculty a unique opportunity to work with underrepresented students increasing cultural competency through this service learning project.   

University of Michigan “Detroit Connections Expansion Project”
Art and Design faculty team will extend the scope of the Detroit Connections course by collaborating with college students in Hannah Smotrich's Publication Design Course. Students will design and publish a book highlighting the collaboration between students and fourth graders at Greenfield Elementary school in Detroit. Children's writings, drawings, and other artwork will be featured in the book.
